More information for researchers and policymakers

Sharing Experiences, Improving Education

Good education is of immense importance, yet it does not come about by itself. To develop education that prepares students for their future and aligns with societal issues, choices must be made continually.

Teachers make decisions in shaping their lesson programmes. Students choose how they want to shape their studies. Administrators decide on the broad strokes for their educational institution.

A key compass for making these choices is educational research. No one prefers to decide based on assumptions, trends, or guesses. Hence, StudentLines brings people and educational data together for longitudinal educational research. A solid foundation for better education.

Shared Experiences

Policy and education are often based on information from grade lists, graduation rates, or attendance percentages. However, students are obviously more than just those numbers, and therefore the information is limited, especially when it comes to well-being and welfare.

For instance, what do students themselves think of the curriculum? How do they experience the transition to the job market, or what did they miss in the first weeks of their education?

Such questions are indeed asked of students within individual programmes. However, it’s often difficult for educational researchers to see which information is available, where, and how it can be used with respect to privacy.

Future proof education

Valuable experiences from students are not always taken into account in making choices aimed at improving education. Yet, it is precisely this wide range of information that is a valuable source for research, policy, and future-proof education.

'StudentLines improves education through synergy in scientific and institutional research. The centre makes data collection much easier, both for scientists and students.'

Carlien Vermue, Team Lead Educational Institutional Research, CIT, University of Groningen

Working Together for Better Education

As the Centre for Educational Data and Research, StudentLines aims to provide more complete and longitudinal information as a basis for solid research. The direct input from students offers a broader and more complete spectrum of data and experiences.

StudentLines assists educational researchers in collecting that information and in legally and ethically safeguarding the research approach. The centre supports the development of a widely supported research plan, thereby promoting insights into educational quality, learning processes, and talent development.

Data, experiences and people

To achieve all this effectively, StudentLines is larger than any single educational institution. Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen and the University of Groningen work within this centre in a unique way, bringing together data, experiences, and people.

Together, we contribute to better research. Educational research that contributes to education that meets the needs of students, the job market, and societal issues. Together, we ensure better and more future-proof education.
